Visual Field Testing

Visual field testing is an important part of many standard comprehensive eye exams. Also known as perimetry testing, visual field testing is used to measure the full scope of a person’s vision, including their peripheral, or side, vision.

The Importance of Visual Field Testing

Visual field testing is one of the most effective diagnostic tools for detecting glaucoma. In many cases, glaucoma affects peripheral vision first, often before a patient notices any changes. Visual field testing can also help identify central or peripheral retinal disease, eyelid conditions such as drooping, optic nerve damage, and conditions that affect the visual pathways between the optic nerve and the part of the brain responsible for processing vision.

Visual field testing is also an important way to monitor patients who may be at risk for vision loss due to disease or other health concerns, including:

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Hyperthyroidism

  • Pituitary gland disorders

  • Central nervous system problems, such as tumors that may be pressing on the brain

  • Stroke

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

What to Expect From Visual Field Testing

There are a variety of methods that can be used to perform visual field testing, including:

Static automated perimetry

This method uses a machine to measure how well a patient detects flashing lights of different sizes and brightness levels in various parts of the visual field while focusing on a central target. The patient responds by pressing a button each time a light is seen.

Kinetic perimetry

This method uses points of light that remain fixed in size and intensity and are shown in the patient’s peripheral vision, then gradually moved inward to help determine the extent of the visual field.

Visual field testing is non-invasive, painless, and typically does not require the eyes to be dilated. Results are presented digitally and sent directly to your eye doctor for interpretation. Depending on the findings, additional diagnostic testing may be recommended. For patients diagnosed with glaucoma, regular visual field testing is often an essential part of monitoring progression and helping guide treatment recommendations.
